Measles Outbreak in Mexico: Cases Rise and Vaccination Efforts Intensify
Mexico is currently experiencing a significant measles outbreak, with cases continuing to rise into 2026. Federal authorities are intensifying vaccination and surveillance measures across all 32 states in response to the escalating health concern. As of February 17, 2026, the outbreak has prompted increased pressure on the healthcare system and raised regulatory scrutiny regarding immunization coverage.
Current Case Numbers and Fatalities
As of February 16, 2026, Mexico has reported 3,418 confirmed measles cases since the beginning of the year. Jalisco state accounts for the majority of these cases, with 1,995 confirmed infections.
To date, a total of 9,850 confirmed measles cases have been reported across Mexico since the outbreak began in 2025. The outbreak has impacted all 32 states, with cases distributed across 354 municipalities.
Tragically, the outbreak has resulted in 28 deaths nationwide. The distribution of fatalities by state is as follows: Chihuahua (21), Jalisco (3), Sonora (1), Durango (2), Michoacán (1), Tlaxcala (1), Mexico City (1), and Chiapas (1).
Outbreak Origins and Spread
The current wave of measles infections initially emerged in February 2025, linked to an outbreak in Texas. In 2025, Mexico reported 6,427 confirmed cases and 24 deaths. Approximately 70% of the 2025 cases were reported in Chihuahua, with 10% in Jalisco.
Government Response and Vaccination Efforts
The Mexican government is urging citizens who have not been vaccinated against measles to do so. Federal and state governments have established vaccination sites to improve access to immunization. Health officials emphasize vaccination as the primary means of interrupting transmission.
Authorities are also working to strengthen domestic vaccine production and enhance supply chain oversight.
PAHO Review and Elimination Status
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Regional Monitoring and Re-Verification Commission for Measles, Rubella, and Congenital Rubella Syndrome (RVC) will convene a virtual meeting with representatives from the United States and Mexico on April 13, 2026, to review their measles elimination status. This follows reported outbreaks in both countries beginning in 2025.
Looking Ahead
Sustaining measles elimination status and preventing broader economic disruption will require vaccination rates exceeding 95%. Continued investment in healthcare, robust supply chains, and workforce continuity are crucial to addressing this ongoing public health challenge.
