Michael Stipe Returns to R.E.M. Classics Onstage with Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy

Michael Stipe made a surprise appearance at a Brooklyn Steel concert on Saturday, March 7, 2026, joining actor Michael Shannon and indie rock musician Jason Narducy to perform two R.E.M. Songs: “These Days” and “The Great Beyond.” This marked the first time Stipe has performed both tracks live since 2008.

A Rare Performance

Shannon and Narducy have been touring the United States performing R.E.M.’s 1986 album, Lifes Rich Pageant, in its entirety to celebrate its 40th anniversary. The duo has previously hosted former members of R.E.M. Onstage, including a 2024 performance in Athens, Georgia, that saw all four original members reunited.

Previous Collaborations

Stipe previously joined Shannon and Narducy onstage in both Athens and Brooklyn in 2025 for a performance of “Pretty Persuasion.” Saturday’s performance saw Stipe close out the show with “These Days,” a track from Lifes Rich Pageant, and “The Great Beyond” from the Man on the Moon soundtrack.

R.E.M.’s Legacy Continues

While a full-fledged R.E.M. Reunion remains unlikely – guitarist Peter Buck has stated the band was correct to disband in 2011, noting disagreements about musical direction and touring – the group continues to celebrate its legacy through these collaborations and a surprise performance at the Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony in June 2024. Buck has previously commented that a reunion “would never be as good.”

Stipe expressed his surprise and appreciation for Shannon and Narducy’s renditions of R.E.M.’s songs, stating, “You can’t imagine how insane it is to hear these songs performed by people so talented. I’ve always been right in the middle of the songs, so to hear them is really fucking surreal.”

Shannon and Narducy’s tour celebrating Lifes Rich Pageant began on February 11th in Denver.
