Michelon Claims Olympic Gold in Biathlon Mass Start, Voborníková Secures Bronze

Anterselva, Italy – France’s Océane Michelonová secured the gold medal in the women’s 12.5km mass start biathlon event at the 2026 Winter Olympics, held in Anterselva. The Czech Republic’s Tereza Voborníková achieved a remarkable bronze medal finish, marking a career highlight and a historic moment for Czech biathlon.

Dramatic Finish Sees French Domination

Michelonová navigated the challenging course with two penalty loops, ultimately triumphing with a 6.6-second lead over her compatriot, Julia Simonová. Voborníková, likewise with one penalty loop, finished 7.4 seconds behind the gold medalist, securing the bronze. Slovakia did not have any athletes competing in the event.

France’s Biathlon Success

This victory brings France’s total medal count to twelve, including six gold medals in biathlon at the 2026 Olympics. Michelonová’s gold adds to her impressive haul at these Games, following a first-place finish in the relay and a silver medal in the sprint. Julia Simonová, with four medals (3 gold, 1 silver), has emerged as the leading female biathlete of the competition.

Voborníková’s Historic Bronze

For Tereza Voborníková, the bronze medal represents the greatest achievement of her career. “I can’t believe it at all, it’s just unbelievable to me,” an emotional Voborníková stated to Czech Television. “After the first missed shot, I thought to myself that I would need a zero for some nice result in the top ten. But I ran quite well. When I left first in the last lap, I didn’t believe it at all. It’s unbelievable that I finished third.”

Challenging Conditions and Farewell to Legends

The race took place in difficult conditions at the Südtirol Arena, with persistent snowfall throughout the event. The competition also marked the final races for German biathlete Franziska Preussová and Italian Dorothea Wiererová, both retiring after the Olympics.

Race Recap

The early stages of the race saw a tightly packed field, with defending gold medalist Justine Braisazová-Bouchetová briefly taking the lead. Julia Simonová initially led after the first shooting round, followed closely by Wiererová and compatriot Lou Jeanmonnotová.

The race dynamics shifted after the second shooting round, with Michelonová taking the lead. A group of 13 biathletes remained in contention. Voborníková capitalized on the hesitation of others during the final standing shooting, briefly taking the lead before Michelonová’s strong finish secured the gold.

Michelonová’s Winning Strategy

“In the final circuit, I said to myself ‘come and enjoy it, come, you recognize you can do the job, enjoy it and have a good finish at the Olympics’. In the final downhill, I saw that I was capable of winning the gold and I place all my energy into it,” Michelonová said, according to the Associated Press.
