Tom Izzo Reflects on Special Connection with Michigan State’s 2026 Senior Class
EAST LANSING, Mich. – As the Michigan State Spartans approach the end of the 2025-26 season, head coach Tom Izzo has expressed a particularly strong connection with his departing senior class, comprised of Carson Cooper, Jaxon Kohler, Nick Sanders, Trey Fort, and Denham Wojcik. Izzo highlighted the unique journey of these players and the lasting impact they will have on the program, extending far beyond their playing careers.
Different Paths, Shared Success
Carson Cooper and Jaxon Kohler represent contrasting recruitment stories. Kohler arrived at Michigan State as a highly-rated four-star recruit, earning comparisons to Nikola Jokić. Cooper, was an unranked player initially on the IMG Academy’s “B team.” Despite their differing expectations, both players have concluded their careers on a high note, contributing to the Spartans’ success.
A Lasting Legacy
Izzo emphasized the significance of this senior class in the evolving landscape of college basketball, noting that they will “ALWAYS have a place to come back to,” even after his tenure. He plans to honor their contributions with a dedicated display in his office, a gesture reserved for players who have made a significant impact on him and the program.
Senior Night Recognition
The Spartans celebrated their seniors on Thursday, March 5, 2026, following a 91-87 victory over Rutgers. Although the close game prevented extended on-court celebrations, Izzo acknowledged the appreciation shown to Kohler, Cooper, and Sanders. He described them as “just the guy next door,” despite their impressive stature, highlighting their down-to-earth personalities.
Kohler and Cooper’s Continued Development
Jaxon Kohler showcased potential for a strong 2025-26 campaign during the Spartans’ Elite Eight run. Both Kohler and Cooper demonstrated resilience and commitment throughout their four years at Michigan State, earning Izzo’s respect for their unwavering dedication to the program.
