Mick Schumacher’s IndyCar Debut Ends in First-Lap Crash at St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg, Florida – Mick Schumacher’s highly anticipated IndyCar Series debut ended abruptly on the first lap of the season-opening St. Petersburg Grand Prix on Sunday, March 1, 2026. The former Formula 1 driver was involved in a multi-car collision just moments after the race began.

Collision Details

Schumacher, driving the No. 47 Honda for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, was caught in a crash initiated by contact between Sting Ray Robb and Santino Ferrucci in Turn 4. With the two cars already crashed ahead of him, Schumacher had no room to maneuver and also became part of the incident. Both Ferrucci and Schumacher were forced to retire from the race.

“That’s racing,” Schumacher said after being checked by medical personnel, according to the Associated Press.

Rough Start for Will Power

The race also marked a challenging debut for two-time IndyCar champion Will Power, now with Andretti Global. Power crashed into the wall on the 21st lap, ending his race early. He was able to return to the race 31 laps behind the leaders after repairs were made to his car.

Palou Secures Victory

Despite the early incidents, the race continued with Alex Palou ultimately claiming victory.

Robb Penalized

Sting Ray Robb received a 30-second penalty for avoidable contact, but was able to continue in the race.
