Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s $79.1 Million Pay Raise Sparks Debate
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella took home a hefty $79.1 million (£61 million) last year, a 63% increase from his compensation in the previous year. This substantial raise, despite a cybersecurity scare, has sparked debate about executive pay in the tech industry.
Cybersecurity Concerns and Reduced Incentive
Despite requesting a reduction in his pay package due to cybersecurity flaws at Microsoft, which resulted in a $5 million decrease, Nadella’s total compensation still reached record levels. The company faced several high-profile cyberattacks during the fiscal year, including one in July 2023 where hackers accessed the email accounts of around 25 organizations, including government agencies.
“Mr. Nadella agreed that the Company’s performance was extremely strong,” Microsoft’s compensation committee wrote in a letter to shareholders.
It added he asked them “to consider departing from the established performance metrics and reduce his cash incentive to reflect his personal accountability” over a number of cyber attacks.
These cybersecurity incidents, along with a massive internet outage in July 2024 affecting Microsoft Windows PCs, have raised concerns about the company’s security posture.
Record Revenue and Stock Options
Despite these challenges, Microsoft’s revenue grew by 16% in the year to June 30, 2024, according to the company’s proxy statement filed with the US financial regulator. Nadella’s compensation package was primarily composed of stock options, which accounted for $71.2 million of his total earnings.
The remaining $5.2 million was cash compensation, which the compensation committee reduced by more than half to reflect Nadella’s personal accountability for the cybersecurity incidents. This reduction, however, still represents less than 7% of his total pay.
High Pay in Tech Raises Questions
While Nadella’s compensation package aligns with Microsoft’s strong financial performance, it has sparked debate about executive pay in the tech industry. Luke Hildyard, director of the High Pay Centre, commented, “superficially” the earnings made sense given Microsoft’s strong financial performance. However, he questioned the necessity of such a large sum for someone already incredibly wealthy.
“None of Microsoft’s success would be possible without workers, customers and wider society so perhaps the proceeds of that success should be share a little more evenly,” he added.
Executive Pay Comparisons
Nadella’s compensation is significant compared to other tech CEOs. Apple boss Tim Cook earned $63.2 million in 2023, while Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang received $34.2 million in the 2024 fiscal year. However, Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s pay package could potentially reach $56 billion.
The debate surrounding executive pay in tech continues, raising questions about fairness, accountability, and the distribution of wealth within these powerful companies.
