Mid-Michigan Wastewater Overflow Concerns Following Heavy Rainfall

Several mid-Michigan communities experienced wastewater overflows in early March 2026, following periods of heavy rainfall. Although some treatment centers have resolved the issue, ongoing concerns remain regarding potential health risks associated with discharges into local waterways.

Bay County: Bay City Wastewater Overflow

Bay City is currently experiencing a wastewater overflow at its treatment center located at 2905 N. Water St. (048). However, several other Bay County treatment centers have ceased overflowing, including those at 33rd and Harrison (014B), 21st and Water (018), 5th and Water (013B), and South Union St. (040A).

Tuscola County: Caro Wastewater Discharge

The city of Caro in Tuscola County experienced an unauthorized discharge of partially treated wastewater after receiving 3 inches of rain within a 12-hour period.

Genesee County: Flint River Discharge

The Flint wastewater treatment plant discharged disinfected wastewater into the Flint River on March 7, 2026, at 8:20 a.m., due to excessive wet-weather flows exceeding the plant’s treatment capacity. This discharge, a precautionary measure mandated by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, consisted of stormwater mixed with partially treated sewage.

Health Recommendations for Flint River

The Genesee County Health Department advises against body contact with the Flint River under high-flow conditions, particularly downstream of the release near the Mill Road Bridge at Flushing Road. High bacterial levels are expected in high-flow areas due to runoff and sediment churning. The State of Michigan website will post results of water sample tests. mlive.com
