Synagogue and University Attacks Heighten Security Concerns Amidst Global Tensions
The United States is grappling with heightened security concerns following separate attacks at a synagogue in Michigan and a university in Virginia on Thursday, March 13, 2026. Authorities are investigating both incidents, with the Virginia attack being investigated as an “act of terror,” occurring as the U.S. Continues its 14th day of military involvement in a conflict alongside Israel in Iran.
Michigan Synagogue Ramming Deemed Targeted Violence
The FBI is investigating a vehicle ramming and subsequent shooting at Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan, as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community. A man drove a vehicle into the synagogue, which also houses an early learning center, and exchanged gunfire with security personnel before being found dead in his vehicle, which had caught fire. FBI officials identified the suspect as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old naturalized U.S. Citizen from Lebanon.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard reported that no one inside the synagogue was injured, and all 140 children and staff present in the early childhood center were safe. One security guard was briefly knocked unconscious by the suspect’s vehicle but is expected to recover. Thirty law enforcement officers were treated for smoke inhalation after the building caught fire, the source of which remains under investigation.
Shooting at Old Dominion University in Virginia
Simultaneously, authorities announced that one person was killed in a shooting at Old Dominion University in Virginia. This attack is currently being investigated as an “act of terror.”

The FBI has stated that, as of now, there are no indications that the attacks at the Michigan synagogue and Old Dominion University were connected.
