Could Killing of Hamas & Hezbollah Leaders Spark New Wave of Terror in UK?

Former MI6 chief warns of potential risks following targeted assassinations.

The killing of key leaders in Hamas and Hezbollah could lead to a surge in Islamic extremist attacks on British soil, according to Sir John Sawers, former head of MI6.

Sawers expressed his concerns in an interview with Sky News, stating that the recent assassination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who masterminded the group’s October attacks on Israel, coupled with changes in leadership within these organizations, necessitates heightened vigilance from UK police and intelligence agencies.

"Islamic terrorism may actually get a further boost from events in the Middle East," Sawers cautioned. "The frustrations that we’ll be seeing because of the lack of movement on the Palestinian question, because of the violence people are witnessing every day."

He added that the new leadership of both Hamas and Hezbollah may become more focused on violence, potentially shifting their targets beyond Israel to include international terrorism, including attacks in the UK.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged a ceasefire in the escalating conflict, speaking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday following a drone attack on Netanyahu’s home.

Starmer condemned the assassination attempt and discussed the killing of Sinwar, whom he described as a "brutal terrorist". He reiterated his stance on securing a ceasefire and ensuring humanitarian aid reaches Gaza.

Despite international calls for a ceasefire, Israel continues its military operations, with reports of intense bombing and gunfire at a hospital in northern Gaza.

The situation in the Middle East remains volatile, with international pressure mounting on all parties to end the conflict and prioritize humanitarian needs.
