Middle East War Expands: US and Israel Strikes on Iran Trigger Wider Conflict

The war in the Middle East has rapidly escalated, expanding to multiple fronts following a joint U.S.-Israeli strike on Saturday, March 1, 2026, that killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Attacks from Iran and Iranian-backed militias are now targeting Israel, Arab states, and U.S. Military assets across the region.

The Spark: Killing of Ayatollah Khamenei

The conflict began with the targeted killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a coordinated operation by the United States and Israel. This action has triggered a wave of retaliatory strikes and heightened tensions throughout the Middle East.

Escalating Attacks and Regional Response

Following Khamenei’s death, Iran launched attacks against countries hosting U.S. Military sites. Israel has responded with strikes against Iranian military sites and targets linked to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, resulting in at least 31 deaths and 149 injuries.

The conflict has as well seen unintended consequences, with Kuwait reportedly shooting down three American fighter aircraft during a combat mission, although all six pilots ejected safely.

International Condemnation and Diplomatic Efforts

The U.N. Security Council held an emergency meeting on Saturday, March 2, 2026, where the U.S. And Israel clashed with Iran. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attacks, stating that U.S. And Israeli airstrikes reportedly killed Khamenei. Many countries have urged a halt to the attacks and a return to negotiations.

Impact and Concerns

The Iranian Red Crescent Society reports that attacks on 131 cities have killed at least 555 people in Iran. Strikes in Tehran have disrupted state television broadcasting. The conflict has led to canceled flights, deadly protests, suspended shipping, and soaring oil prices.

U.S. President Donald Trump has predicted the war could last “four weeks,” while Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, emphasized that this is not a “single, overnight operation.”

Further Attacks and Warnings

Two Iranian drones struck the U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia, causing a limited fire, and the American consulate in Dubai also caught fire due to a suspected Iranian drone. The U.S. State Department has urged American citizens to “immediately” abandon as many as 15 countries in the region.

Tehran has warned that any “defensive action” by European countries will be considered “an act of war,” and the Pasdaran have threatened retaliation, predicting oil prices could reach $200 per barrel.

Lebanon and European Involvement

Israel has advanced into southern Lebanon for the first time since November 2024, aiming to create a “security buffer” against Hezbollah. This has led to the displacement of at least 30,000 people in Lebanon.

European countries, including the United Kingdom and France, are sending military reinforcements to the region, with the UK deploying the Dragon military ship and anti-drone helicopters to Cyprus and France sending the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier.
