Miguel Herrera Reveals Resignation Attempt at Club América, Details Tensions with Santiago Baños

Former Club América coach Miguel Herrera recently disclosed that he offered his resignation following a defeat in Orlando, but the offer was initially rejected by sporting president Santiago Baños. Herrera detailed the events in a recent interview, revealing a complex dynamic with the club’s leadership during his tenure.

Resignation Following Orlando Loss

According to Herrera, he informed Santiago Baños of his intention to resign immediately after a loss in Orlando. “We lost the game in Orlando and at night I told Santiago Baños, ‘there is the team, I’m leaving,’” Herrera recounted. However, Baños urged him to stay, stating, “Of course not, I already spoke with them and they told me that you were still firm.”

Continued Planning Despite Uncertainty

The situation remained unclear the following day. Herrera stated that Baños requested his presence at a team planning session. “I arrive at the airport and Baños tells me ‘at 9 in the morning we continue with the team planning, see you there.’ But at 9:15 a message and at 9:30 he was outside America,” Herrera explained, suggesting a swift change of plans and his eventual departure from the club.

Departure Described as a Dismissal

Herrera characterized his exit as a dismissal, stating, “For zoom they kicked me out, the truth is they are decisions they create and I understand them perfectly.”

Pressure Compared Between Club and National Team

Herrera also drew comparisons between the pressure he faced at Club América and his time with the Mexican national team. “The one about the national team, but just barely. In the national team an entire country throws at you, here in America part of the country throws at you,” he added, highlighting the intense scrutiny that comes with coaching one of Mexico’s most prominent clubs.

Club América’s Current Situation

As of February 2, 2026, Santiago Baños and André Jardine are under scrutiny following changes within the Club América organization, as reported on Fox Deportes. The club is currently preparing for future competitions, including potential matches against international opponents like Inter Miami CF, as evidenced by a preseason match scheduled for January 18, 2025, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas Allegiant Stadium.

Club América, historically the most successful team in Mexican league history with 15 titles, continues to navigate challenges as it prepares for the future, with Santiago Baños leading the sporting direction ESPN Deportes.
