Magnitude 6.6 Earthquake Strikes Offshore Davao, Triggering Seabed Elevation and Damage Assessments
A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck offshore Davao Oriental and parts of Mindanao on May 21, 2024, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The quake, centered approximately 70 kilometers southeast of Davao City, was felt across the region, with reports of ground deformation and structural damage, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Seabed Elevation and Ground Deformation Reported

Initial assessments by Phivolcs indicate that the earthquake caused significant ground deformation in Sarangani Province and General Santos City, with some areas experiencing seabed elevation of up to two meters, as reported by ABS-CBN. “The tectonic activity has resulted in visible shifts in the landscape, particularly along coastal regions,” said Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum.
Government and Local Responses to the Disaster
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. visited Sarangani Province on May 22 to inspect damage to a school and assess the situation, according to Inquirer.net. The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) confirmed that emergency response teams are evaluating infrastructure and coordinating with local governments. “Our priority is ensuring the safety of affected communities and providing immediate relief,” said DILG Secretary Benjamin Diokno.
Impact on Communities and Infrastructure
Residents in Davao Oriental and nearby municipalities reported power outages and minor structural damage to buildings, per Philstar.com. The Philippine Red Cross has deployed teams to distribute emergency supplies, while the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) issued warnings for potential aftershocks.
Scientific Analysis and Ongoing Monitoring
The USGS classified the quake as a “shallow crustal earthquake,” with a depth of 10 kilometers. Phivolcs continues to monitor seismic activity, noting that the region lies along the Philippine Fault System, a known zone of tectonic stress. “This event underscores the importance of preparedness in seismically active areas,” said Dr. Eric Oliveros, a Phivolcs seismologist.
What’s Next for Affected Regions?
Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant as aftershocks remain possible. Long-term recovery efforts will focus on assessing structural integrity and reinforcing infrastructure. The NDRRMC has also requested additional funding from Congress to support affected communities.
