Minecraft’s Vibrant Visuals: A Deep Dive into Mojang’s Graphic Revolution

The blocky world of Minecraft continues to undergo a significant visual transformation, thanks to the arrival of ‘Vibrant Visuals’ and increasingly mature Ray Tracing technology. These advancements are delivering a more immersive experience with graphics that approach realism for players of the Bedrock Edition.

Vibrant Visuals: Mojang’s Graphic Revolution

Mojang Studios introduced ‘Vibrant Visuals’ as a major graphical upgrade for Minecraft Bedrock Edition. Announced at Minecraft Live in March 2025, the update aims to provide significant visual improvements, including directional lighting, volumetric fog, pixelated shadows and sparkling water effects. Art Director Jasper Boerstra explained the inspiration came from observing streamers and their use of shaders. He noted players often disabled shaders during building to improve clarity, leading to the desire for graphics that didn’t necessitate to be toggled on and off.

Released for compatible Bedrock Edition devices in late 2025, Vibrant Visuals is an optional feature activated through the game’s menu, allowing players to easily switch between the original and enhanced visuals. Mojang Studios intends to bring these improvements to Minecraft: Java Edition in the future.

The Role of Render Dragon and Ray Tracing

These visual improvements are enabled by the Render Dragon engine, the core graphics rendering engine for Minecraft Bedrock Edition. Render Dragon facilitates more realistic lighting and shading. Ray Tracing technology, first introduced in a beta version of Bedrock Edition in April 2020 and publicly released in December 2020, further enhances the visual experience with realistic lighting capabilities like global illumination and per-pixel lighting, as well as support for advanced textures.

Ray Tracing requires DirectX-compatible hardware, such as an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 20 Series or higher, or an AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series or higher, along with a 64-bit Windows operating system. Although Vibrant Visuals is currently the primary focus of Mojang’s graphics development, Ray Tracing remains supported and will continue to function on compatible devices. Mojang clarified in October 2025 that there are no plans to remove RTX support, and any changes would be communicated through official channels.

The Thriving Shader Community

Beyond official updates, the Minecraft Bedrock modding community actively creates shader packs offering diverse visual styles, ranging from extreme realism to unique cartoon aesthetics. Popular shaders in early 2026 include “Luma Shade – Vibrant Visuals Pack,” named the top shader of the year, “Relta Visuals” for its color saturation and dynamic shadows, “Phantom Visuals” for artistic lighting, “Lumenix Shader” with light intensity and saturation, and “Zen Visuals,” which balances visual quality with performance. “Prizma Visuals 2.0” and “Revolution Deferred” too stand out for their realistic lighting and high water quality.

Shader performance varies depending on the device. Shaders like “Zen Visuals” are designed to balance visual quality with smooth gameplay, offering bright visuals without lag.

Platform Availability and Support

Minecraft Bedrock Edition, developed by Mojang Studios and published by Xbox Game Studios, is available on Windows 10/11, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS, and Chromebook devices.

As of early 2026, Minecraft Bedrock Edition has adopted a novel version numbering system, beginning with version 26.0. The first patch of 2026, version 1.21.132 (or console update 3.29), released on January 8, 2026, included fixes for graphical and connection issues experienced by Xbox players.
