Irish Ministers Complete Repayments of Incorrect Pension Deductions

All Irish government ministers and ministers of state have either concluded or have arrangements in place to return overpayments made to them by the National Shared Services Office (NSSO), according to Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers. The overpayments stemmed from incorrect pension calculations related to ministers gifting portions of their salaries back to the State.

Background of the Issue

In June 2025, it emerged that the NSSO had made errors in calculating pension deductions for current and former ministers and office holders. These errors resulted from administrative issues within the NSSO, and were not the fault of the individuals impacted [Department of Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation]. The total miscalculation for former and current ministers amounted to €360,000, as confirmed by documentation provided to the Public Accounts Committee on December 24th [Irish Examiner].

Recent Developments

Initially, ten serving ministers had not yet begun the repayment process, drawing criticism from the Opposition [Irish Examiner]. But, Minister Chambers has stated that all current ministers have now taken action to address the issue. As of January 6th, ten ministers were still engaging with the NSSO to establish a repayment plan [Irish Examiner].

Individual Repayment Plans

Spokespeople for Housing Minister James Browne and Arts Minister Patrick O’Donovan have confirmed that both ministers are working with the NSSO on repayment plans [Irish Examiner]. Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee has also “engaged with the NSSO on a repayment” and agreed to a repayment plan [Irish Times].

Ongoing Audit

Minister Chambers has requested an “immediate” external forensic audit of the NSSO to investigate the “dysfunction” surrounding the pension issue [AHPCS]. As of February 2, 2026, he had not yet received the results of this audit [Irish Examiner].

NSSO Response

The NSSO has declined to disclose the number of ministers who have entered into repayment plans, citing “privacy and confidentiality” [Irish Examiner].
