Long-Term Teacher Sick Leave in Hesse: A Closer Look

Recent reports from North rhine-Westphalia regarding teachers appearing on cooking shows while on extended sick leave, and a case of a teacher absent for approximately 16 years in the Ruhr area, have brought the issue of long-term teacher absence into the spotlight. While the Ministry of culture and the GEW education union in Hesse are not currently aware of similar high-profile cases, data reveals that long-term teacher sick leave does occur within the state.

Currently, approximately 225 out of the roughly 67,000 teachers in the Hessian school system are on long-term sick leave, defined as absence for at least one year. Furthermore, 16 teachers are currently absent for five years or longer. In 2023, 222 civil servant teachers were retired due to incapacity, a figure comparable to the previous year. The Ministry of Culture in Wiesbaden reports no evidence of attempts to deceive the system regarding these extended absences.

Sick leave of more than five years is extremely rare

According to the Ministry, sick leave exceeding five years is exceptionally uncommon. The reasons for long-term teacher absence are varied and complex, often stemming from burnout, mental health challenges, and chronic physical conditions. The impact of these absences is notable, placing additional strain on remaining teachers and potentially affecting the quality of education provided to students.

The state authorities are continually working to address the factors contributing to teacher burnout and to provide support for teachers struggling with their health. This includes initiatives focused on reducing workload, improving working conditions, and offering access to mental health resources.
