Datuk Misbun Sidek Embraces Indian Cuisine and Rigorous Training Regime in First Overseas Coaching Stint

PETALING JAYA – Badminton legend Datuk Misbun Sidek has quickly adapted to life in India, embracing the local cuisine and implementing his renowned, demanding training methods at the Hatsun Badminton Centre in Thiruthangal, Tamil Nadu.

As Ramadan begins, Misbun is set to enjoy a diet of naan, chapati, spicy curries, and teh tarik, according to reports. The 66-year-old coach, however, shows no sign of slowing down despite the holy month, continuing to lead intensive training sessions approximately 70km from Madurai.

“They are treating me very well here. There’s a cafeteria, and some of the staff have worked in Malaysia before, so they know what I like,” Misbun stated. “I just have to ask. Usually, it’s naan, chapati and tosai. They even have mee goreng!”

Beyond the culinary delights, Misbun has been impressed by the respect and eagerness of the players and coaches, led by head coach Rajinikanth. “They show a lot of respect and I appreciate their humility. The players are eager to learn,” he said.

Intense Training Schedule

Known for his no-nonsense approach, Misbun has already increased the training volume at the centre. Training sessions now begin as early as 5 am and are held twice daily, a significant increase from the previous schedule. Players have reportedly been experiencing cramps and frequently changing sweat-soaked shirts, but their attendance and enthusiasm remain high.

“They were shocked to see me at the court even before 5am. Some said they had never suffered cramps before,” Misbun added with a laugh. Afternoon sessions incorporate gym function and pool exercises, and the traditional Sunday off has been adjusted to maintain the rigorous schedule.

Identifying Potential

Misbun has also observed that many of the players possess the physical attributes necessary for success in the modern game. “Most of them are tall, like Hafiz (Hashim) and (Lee) Zii Jia. They have good physique for badminton,” he noted.

Facilities and Community

The Hatsun Badminton Centre provides comprehensive facilities for approximately 100 players, including secure accommodation, recovery areas, and recreational spaces. “Inside, they even have a conference hall, and comfortable space to relax and watch movies after a tiring day and they do play chess here too,” Misbun said.

Ramadan Training

Despite observing Ramadan, Misbun intends to maintain the intensity of the training regime. “It will be the same for me. I will observe the fasting month, but the training intensity will remain. I’m used to this,” he affirmed. He also spent time with centre owner R.G. Chandramogan on Sunday.
