Mithridate’s Creative Shift: Daniel Fletcher’s Vision for the Guangzhou-Born Luxury Label
One year into his tenure as creative director, Daniel Fletcher is solidifying his vision for Mithridate, the luxury label originally founded in London in 2018 and now headquartered in Guangzhou. His latest collection, presented at London Fashion Week, showcased a growing confidence and a compelling narrative centered around the historical connection between China and the United Kingdom.
A Blooming Heritage: The Chinese Wisteria Story
Fletcher anchored the Fall 2026 collection around the Chinese wisteria, a flower with a unique history. The first Chinese wisteria was brought from Guangzhou to London in the 1800s and continues to bloom in Chiswick today. This historical anecdote served as a powerful symbol for Fletcher, representing his hope for the future of Mithridate – a flourishing blend of Chinese heritage and British design. “This idea of bringing this Chinese heritage to the U.K. And seeing it grow and bloom is my hope for the future of Mithridate,” Fletcher stated WWD.
From River Thames to the Runway: A Character Study
The collection itself was envisioned as a character study, inspired by a journey up the River Thames. Fletcher drew inspiration from the diverse individuals encountered along the river’s path – bankers in Canary Wharf, intellectuals in Bloomsbury, revellers in Mayfair and recreational fishermen in Richmond. He skillfully integrated these observations into a cohesive and detailed collection.
Key Design Elements and Inspirations
The Fall 2026 collection featured updated pea coats and duffle coats referencing countryside and maritime traditions. Fly-fishing inspired details, such as feathers and tweeds, underscored the riverbank theme. Aran and Fair Isle knits were juxtaposed with appliqué and printed skirts, creating textural contrast. Eveningwear included two-piece minidresses and a silk jacquard, bead-embroidered dress that echoed the wisteria motif.
A Commercial Edge
Accessories were designed with a more commercial focus, featuring structured bags, belts, and watch-strap-style jewelry to complement the city-facing aesthetic. This shift reflects Mithridate’s broader strategy to appeal to a Western customer base, as the Chinese luxury market faces challenges Vogue Business.
Mithridate’s Evolution and Leadership
Founded by Tina Jiang, Mithridate originally specialized in extravagant eveningwear, prints, and embellishments. The label operates alongside Mith World, a high-street concept with over 200 stores across China, while Mithridate itself has seven standalone stores in major Chinese cities Vogue Business. After the departure of previous creative director Demon Zhang in late 2024, Jiang sought a new direction, ultimately appointing Daniel Fletcher, who as well runs his eponymous brand, Daniel W. Fletcher, and has held roles at JW Anderson and Louis Vuitton Mithridate.
