Diamondbacks’ Kelly Awaits MRI Results, Pitching Market Remains Quiet

The Arizona Diamondbacks are monitoring right-hander Merrill Kelly after he experienced mid-back tightness, sidelining him from a scheduled live batting practice session. Meanwhile, the MLB pitching market remains relatively subdued as Spring Training progresses.

Merrill Kelly’s Injury Status

Arizona Diamondbacks’ manager Torey Lovullo provided an update on Kelly’s condition on Monday, stating the team is awaiting the results of an MRI taken on Sunday. Lovullo expressed optimism, noting Kelly was “feeling good,” but acknowledged the possibility the injury could impact his availability for Opening Day . Despite the uncertainty, Lovullo indicated he hadn’t yet begun considering alternative Opening Day starters .

The team is proceeding cautiously given Kelly’s age and the importance of the veteran pitcher to their rotation. A potential injured list stint could open opportunities for Brandon Pfaadt, Eduardo Rodriguez, and Michael Soroka to compete for rotation spots .

Slow Pitching Market

While several positional free agents have signed minor league deals recently, including Michael Conforto and Thairo Estrada, the market for pitchers remains slow . Starters such as Lucas Giolito, Zack Littell, and Tyler Anderson are still available, as are relief pitchers Michael Kopech, Danny Coulombe, and Tommy Kahnle .

Many clubs are waiting to see if pitchers will hold out in hopes of securing more favorable contracts closer to the regular season, but most teams are only one or two injuries away from needing to add pitching depth .

Diamondbacks Spring Training Notes

Ryan Waldschmidt, the Diamondbacks’ top prospect, is making a strong case for an Opening Day roster spot with recent performances in Spring Training games. He doubled and made a running catch on February 22nd, followed by a two-run home run on February 23rd against the Cleveland Guardians . Waldschmidt, the 2025 Diamondbacks Minor League Player of the Year, emphasized the importance of focusing on his own game and controlling what he can control .
