PM Modi Addresses Lok Sabha on West Asia Conflict, Outlines India’s Strategy
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Lok Sabha on Monday, warning that global disruptions triggered by the escalating conflict in West Asia could persist. He urged the nation to remain prepared and united, mirroring the approach taken during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Prime Minister outlined steps taken to minimize the impact on Indian citizens, focusing on fuel, fertilizer, national security, and the safety of Indians in the region.
Disruption to Global Trade ‘Unacceptable’
Prime Minister Modi emphasized that attacks on commercial shipping and disruptions to critical waterways, particularly the Strait of Hormuz – which handles nearly 20% of global energy supplies – are “wholly unacceptable.” He stressed that endangering lives is contrary to humanitarian principles. India has consistently expressed concern over the conflict, opposed attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure, and actively pushed for de-escalation and a cessation of hostilities.
Diplomatic efforts have ensured the safe passage of Indian vessels, with several ships recently navigating the Strait of Hormuz. The Prime Minister cautioned against potential exploitation of the situation by certain elements, noting that all agencies are on high alert, strengthening security across coastal, border, cyber, and strategic domains. He urged vigilance against misinformation, black-marketing, and hoarding, directing states to implement strict monitoring and swift action.
India’s Preparedness and Economic Resilience
Modi highlighted India’s increasing energy diversification, expanding import sources from 27 to 41 countries over the past decade, reducing reliance on any single region. India currently holds over 5.3 million metric tonnes of strategic petroleum reserves and is actively working to increase storage capacity.
More than 375,000 Indians have returned home since the conflict began, including approximately 1,000 from Iran, many of whom were students. The government is actively monitoring supply chains through an inter-ministerial group, developing short, medium, and long-term strategies to mitigate the economic impact. Modi affirmed that India is well-prepared with adequate foodgrain stocks, arranged fertilizer supplies for the upcoming kharif sowing season, sufficient coal reserves for power plants, and expanding renewable energy capacity.
Commitment to Dialogue and Diplomacy
Reaffirming India’s commitment to peace, Prime Minister Modi underscored that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path forward. India is actively advocating for de-escalation and a cessation of hostilities in the region.
The Prime Minister expressed confidence that, through collective effort, India will effectively navigate the crisis, even as the conflict continues to exert pressure on the global economy and the lives of people worldwide.
