Monsters, Inc. 3 Officially in Development at Pixar

Pixar Animation Studios is moving forward with a third installment in the Monsters, Inc. franchise, according to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal. The announcement comes as Pixar outlines a slate of upcoming sequels, including Toy Story 5, Incredibles 3, and a follow-up to Coco.

The Legacy of Monsters, Inc.

Monsters, Inc., directed by Pete Docter, debuted in 2001 and quickly became a critical and commercial success, grossing over $528.7 million worldwide. The film centers on the comedic duo of Mike Wazowski (voiced by Billy Crystal) and James P. “Sully” Sullivan (voiced by John Goodman), who work at Monsters, Inc., a company that generates power by scaring children.

Expanding the Monsters Universe

The Monsters, Inc. franchise has expanded beyond the original film with the 2013 prequel, Monsters University, which explored the origins of Mike and Sully’s friendship. More recently, the Disney+ series Monsters at Work, premiered in 2021 and ran for two seasons, continuing the story within the Monsters, Inc. World.

Pixar’s Upcoming Projects

Beyond Monsters, Inc. 3, Pixar has several other highly anticipated projects in development. Toy Story 5 is expected to be another major release for the studio. Incredibles 3 is currently slated for a 2028 release, and a sequel to the Academy Award-winning film Coco is planned for 2029.

New Creative Ventures

In addition to sequels, Pixar is also exploring new creative avenues. The studio is developing its first-ever musical and a feature film titled Ono Ghost Market, inspired by Asian myths about supernatural bazaars where the living and dead interact.

Hoppers’ Box Office Success

Currently, Pixar’s latest release, Hoppers, is projected to lead the weekend box office with an opening of $40 million or more domestically. This would mark the largest opening for an original animated film since Coco in 2017.

Disney has been contacted by The Hollywood Reporter for comment.
