Montpellier Mayor Delafosse Heads to Runoff, Faces Challenges from Oziol and Altrad

Montpellier voters will choose between incumbent Michaël Delafosse, Nathalie Oziol and Mohed Altrad in a second-round runoff for mayor on March 22, 2026. Delafosse, the socialist mayor, secured a significant lead in the first round, but faces strong competition from Oziol, representing the left-wing La France Insoumise (LFI) party, and businessman Mohed Altrad.

First-Round Results

Michaël Delafosse (Demain Montpellier / UG) received 33.41% of the vote (29,069 votes) in the first round, surpassing his performance in the 2020 runoff (24,046 votes). Nathalie Oziol (Faire mieux pour Montpellier / FI) garnered 15.36% (13,366 votes), marking a significant achievement for LFI, securing a place for the party on the municipal council. Mohed Altrad (Montpellier notre fierté / DVC) too qualified for the second round with 11.31% of the vote.

A Three-Way Race

The election has narrowed to a three-candidate race, with Delafosse aiming to secure another term, Oziol hoping to capitalize on left-wing support, and Altrad seeking to present an alternative vision for the city. Delafosse has stated he will not form any alliances for the second round, maintaining his current list of candidates.

Concerns Over Election Integrity

Rémi Gaillard, a candidate who did not qualify for the second round, has raised concerns about the distribution of campaign materials, alleging that his campaign literature was not delivered to as many households as Delafosse’s. However, the likelihood of a successful challenge to the election results appears low.

High Abstention Rates

The first round of the election saw record abstention rates in Montpellier’s popular neighborhoods, particularly in La Paillade, where 73.3% of registered voters did not participate. This disparity in voter turnout is expected to be a key issue in the lead-up to the second round.

Looking Ahead

The second round on March 22nd will be crucial in determining the future leadership of Montpellier. The outcome will likely depend on the ability of each candidate to mobilize their supporters and address concerns about voter turnout, particularly in traditionally underrepresented communities.
