Doctor Accused of Multiple Sexual Assaults Attempted to Shield Assets

A Montreal doctor convicted of sexual assault – and accused of sexually assaulting seven other women – attempted to protect his assets from potential lawsuits by his victims before his death by suicide, according to two recently filed lawsuits.

The lawsuits, filed in Montreal earlier this month, allege that Stephan Probst, formerly the head of nuclear medicine at the Jewish General Hospital, sexually assaulted two women, identified in court documents as A and G. Both A and G are seeking damages exceeding $300,000 from probst’s estate.

The lawsuits further claim Probst transferred ownership of two properties to his partner, Wendy Devera, in a purposeful effort to prevent his alleged victims from successfully pursuing legal action against his estate.

Both Probst and Devera were convicted in August 2024 of sexually assaulting a woman known as X in court documents.Six months later, prosecutors brought additional charges against Probst, alleging sexual assaults against seven more women between 2003 and 2020.

A and G state in their lawsuits that they were among these additional women and came forward to police after learning details of X’s case through media reports. They assert that their own experiences closely resembled those of X.

Devera was sentenced on Monday to two years minus a day for her role in the assault on X. She will serve half of her sentence under house arrest, with the remaining portion served in the community under specific conditions.

Quebec court Judge Suzanne Costom stated in her sentencing decision that she believes Devera would not have committed the sexual assault had she not been in a relationship with Probst.

Probst died by suicide in June 2025, according to court documents, before sentencing for the 2020 assault on X and before the additional charges against him could be addressed in court.

Looking Ahead

These lawsuits raise important questions about asset protection and accountability in cases of sexual assault.the courts will now need to determine the validity of the claims that Probst intentionally transferred assets to avoid potential judgments. this case could set a precedent for similar situations, possibly strengthening protections for victims seeking financial redress. The outcome will likely influence future legal strategies employed by both victims and alleged perpetrators in similar cases.
