Melbourne’s Lennox St Deli Serves Up a Supersized Fish-Finger Sanga That’s Causing a Stir
Moonee Ponds cafe, Lennox St Deli, is drawing crowds with its February special: a fish-finger sandwich of epic proportions. The sandwich has grow so popular it’s been selling out daily, according to co-owner Mark Racovalis.
Located across from a primary school on a quiet residential street, Lennox St Deli has quickly become a local favorite. The cafe, which opened 18 months ago, is run by Racovalis and his partner, Ross Surace. Many of their sandwich fillings are made in-house, including the fish fingers themselves.
A Sandwich Like No Other
The fish-finger sanga is notable for its size and the thickness of the shokupan, or Japanese milk bread, used to hold it together. Diners have described the experience of eating it as “like faceplanting a pillow,” due to the soft bread enveloping the filling.
But the sandwich isn’t just about the bread. The fish fingers are a step above the standard Birds Eye variety, featuring a panko crumb seasoned with Old Bay Seasoning and smoked paprika for a “Southern, Louisiana perceive.” They are deep-fried to order. A generous helping of house-made tartare sauce, loaded with herbs, capers, and sweet pickles, accompanies the fish, along with American cheese, pickled red onions, and shredded iceberg lettuce.
Beyond the Fish Sanga
While the fish-finger sandwich is the current star, Lennox St Deli offers a variety of other options, including a Waldorf salad with poached chicken, a spicy Reuben, and a muffuletta with assorted cold cuts.
How to Find It
The fish-finger sandwich is available at Lennox St Deli, located at 130 Eglinton Street, Moonee Ponds, Tuesday through Sunday until sold out, through the end of February. The sandwich costs $18.
