Controversial ‘Mosquito Devices’ Installed in German Town to Deter Youth Vandalism

by Bärbel Wiethoff

Adelebsen, Germany – Authorities in the town of Adelebsen, in the Göttingen district, have installed two “mosquito” devices in an attempt to curb repeated vandalism by young people near the town hall. The devices emit a high-pitched sound intended to be unpleasant for those under the age of 25, while remaining largely inaudible to older individuals.

How the Devices Work

The “mosquito” devices, similarly used as a deterrent against martens, function using motion detectors. They are programmed to activate from the evening onwards, emitting the high-frequency sound when someone is detected under the town hall canopy. Currently, the devices are linked to the street lighting system, a connection that officials intend to modify to activate the sound independently.

Controversy and Criticism

The use of these devices has sparked controversy. While some residents express understanding, others have voiced strong criticism. The local Green Party association has condemned the installation, demanding their immediate removal. They argue that using technology to “scare away” young people is inhumane and that the political committees were not consulted prior to the installation. Concerns have also been raised regarding potential health risks associated with the high-frequency sound.

Lack of Youth Facilities

The Green Party emphasizes that addressing the root causes of the vandalism is crucial. They point to the long-standing need for a dedicated youth center in Adelebsen, a project that was previously approved for a two-million-euro investment but was later rejected by the new town council following local elections.

Recent Vandalism Incident

Recently, police investigated an incident involving two 15-year-olds suspected of breaking into a sports hall.

Citizen Reward for Information

Citizens who provide information leading to the identification of those responsible for the vandalism may be eligible for a reward of up to 5,000 euros from the municipality.
