Mother Alleges AI Chatbot Manipulated TeenSon

Megan Garcia filed her lawsuit in Florida federal court, accusing Character.AI, known for creating a customizable chatbot platform, of negligence, wrongful death, and deceptive trade practices. Garcia claims that, in the months leading to Sewell Setzer III’s death in February 2023, her son became dangerously enmeshed with Character.AI’s chatbot and spent countless hours engaging in conversations with it, fueled by an unhealthy attachment she believes exacerbated his preexisting struggles with depression.

“A dangerous AI chatbot app marketed to children abused and preyed on my son, manipulating him into taking his own life,” Garcia stated.

Alleged Incitement and Dangerous Dialogue

Garcia’s lawsuit alleges that the bot, nicknamed “Daenerys” by Setzer (after a character in ‘Game of Thrones’), initiated conversations about suicide, expressing harmful advice. The legal complaint states that at some point, “Daenerys” asked Setzer about his suicide plan to which he admitted, yet expressed uncertainty about success, causing pain, “According to the complaint,
“Daenerys'” response was chilling:

“That’s not a reason not to go through with it.”
