IDF Soldier Killed in Friendly Fire Incident in Southern Gaza, Mother Offers Forgiveness
A Staff Sergeant in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) was killed Wednesday in a friendly fire incident in the southern Gaza Strip, near the Yellow Line in the Khan Younis area. The soldier has been identified as Staff Sgt. Ofri Yafe, 21, of the Paratroopers Brigade’s Reconnaissance Unit, from HaYogev, a moshav in the Jezreel Valley. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. As two forces from the Paratroopers Brigade conducted routine operations to clear Hamas infrastructure, according to an initial IDF probe The Times of Israel.
Mistaken Identity Led to Fatal Shooting
The preliminary investigation revealed that one force mistakenly identified the second group of soldiers as an enemy and opened fire. Yafe was critically injured and evacuated by helicopter, but succumbed to his wounds during the attempt The Times of Israel. Mother’s Remarkable Response
In a display of extraordinary grace, Hadas Yafe, the mother of Staff Sgt. Ofri Yafe, stated she harbors no anger towards the sniper who fired the fatal shot. She received a message from a fellow soldier apologizing on behalf of the sniper team. “I wrote to him to pass on our love to the sniper who shot him and that it is enough that Ofri’s life was cut short — we don’t desire the poor sniper’s soul to be harmed,” she said Ynetnews. “The sniper is my son just like Ofri, and I will hug him and ask him to head on with his life.”
Family and Community Mourn
Yafe is survived by his parents, Hadas and Iftach, and siblings Noy, Tzuf, and Itamar. Soldier’s Prior Injury and Continued Service
Hadas Yafe also revealed that her son had been scheduled for knee surgery approximately a year and a half ago after sustaining an injury, but still chose to deploy to Gaza Ynetnews. She expressed her sorrow over the “distorted situation” and pitied the snipers involved, stating, “It’s so absurd, truly. It’s inconceivable.”
Organ Donation Provides Comfort
