Guinea Responds to Recent Mpox Cases
Conakry, Guinea – June 29, 2025 – Health officials in Guinea are actively addressing a recent outbreak of Mpox, with 18 confirmed cases identified in Conakry and othre regions throughout the country. The announcement was made today following a technical briefing led by a representative from the National Agency for Health Security (ANSS).
Current Situation and Patient Care
Individuals diagnosed with Mpox are currently receiving specialized care in isolation at the Nongo epidemiological treatment center located on the outskirts of Conakry. This centralized approach allows for focused medical attention and helps to limit potential transmission. Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is an infectious disease characterized by a distinctive rash, alongside symptoms like swollen lymph nodes, fever, headache, and muscle aches [[2]]. while most individuals recover fully, severe illness can occur in certain specific cases.
National Response and Prevention Measures
In response to the emerging cases, the ANSS has initiated a complete national response and alert plan. This plan prioritizes the swift identification and appropriate medical management of any newly detected cases across all Guinean regions. A key component of this strategy involves heightened surveillance at 15 designated priority entry points. At these locations, medical personnel are conducting health screenings for individuals entering the country, functioning as a crucial first line of defense against further importation of the virus.
Regional collaboration for Enhanced Surveillance
Recognizing the importance of a coordinated regional approach, Guinean health authorities are maintaining close interaction with their counterparts in neighboring Sierra Leone and Liberia. This collaboration facilitates the timely exchange of critical details regarding Mpox circulation patterns, enabling a more effective and unified response to the threat. The World Health Institution has previously declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, highlighting the global importance of vigilance and collaborative efforts [[1]]. Recent reports indicate ongoing outbreaks and geographic expansion of Mpox in the African Region [[3]].
