NATO Marks Four Years of Russia’s War in Ukraine, Calls for Increased Support

As the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine is observed on February 24, 2026, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is reaffirming its commitment to Ukraine and urging Western allies to significantly increase their support. The call for bolstered aid comes as Ukraine continues to face substantial challenges on the battlefield and as discussions around a potential peace deal remain ongoing.

NATO Commemorates the Anniversary

NATO marked the fourth anniversary with a ceremony and a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council at its headquarters in Brussels. This event underscores the alliance’s continued solidarity with Ukraine and its dedication to supporting the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. NATO highlighted the importance of sustained assistance to Ukraine.

Russia’s Losses and Potential for Rebuilding

Recent assessments indicate that Russian forces are suffering significant casualties, reportedly losing thousands of troops for each mile gained in Ukraine. Despite these losses, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, Chair of the NATO Military Committee, suggests that Russia could potentially rebuild its pre-war capabilities within three to five years should a peace agreement be reached. According to Adm. Dragone, Russia demonstrates resilience and is expected to maintain a strong conventional force.

The Need for Sustained Western Support

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has emphasized the critical need for increased military, financial, and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. He warned that Kyiv cannot effectively defend itself without stronger support from Western allies. Rutte stated that promises of aid are insufficient and that Ukraine requires immediate and ongoing deliveries of ammunition and air defense systems.

Conditions for a Lasting Peace

Discussions surrounding a potential peace deal highlight the importance of establishing conditions for a lasting resolution. NATO believes that any peace agreement must ensure Ukraine has strong forces capable of deterring future aggression, along with effective security guarantees from its partners – including Europe, Canada, and the United States. Rutte stressed that true peace in Europe cannot be achieved without a secure and peaceful Ukraine.

Lessons from the Battlefield

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has provided valuable lessons regarding modern warfare and the importance of sustained military aid. As of early 2025, the United States had authorized approximately $68 billion in military equipment and aid to Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion. Delays in aid delivery directly translate to increased risks on the battlefield.

The situation remains fluid, but NATO remains committed to supporting Ukraine and working towards a just and lasting peace.
