Museveni Urges Ugandans Towards Economic Self-Reliance Through Key Sectors

Table of Contents

Kawempe, Uganda – President Yoweri Museveni has emphasized the importance of economic self-reliance for Ugandans, urging citizens to actively participate in wealth creation through four key sectors: commercial agriculture, manufacturing, services, and ICT. Addressing a rally in Kawempe Division on January 15th, the President highlighted opportunities available within Uganda, countering the narrative that citizens must seek employment abroad.

Four-Acre Model and Diversification

President Museveni revisited the four-acre model initially proposed in the 1996 NRM Manifesto, advocating for diversified farming practices. This model suggests allocating land as follows: one acre for coffee, one for fruits, one for zero-grazing livestock, and one for food crops. Supplementing this, he encouraged backyard farming with poultry, piggery, and fish farming where feasible. He noted that even those with limited landholdings can benefit by focusing on one or more of these activities.

Success Stories and Economic Impact

The President cited Johnson Basangwa of Kamuli District as a prime example of success through poultry farming. Basangwa’s operation reportedly generates approximately UGX 7.2 billion annually, while also providing employment for 300 people. This example underscores the potential for meaningful economic impact through focused agricultural ventures.

Beyond Agriculture: Manufacturing, Services, and ICT

Museveni stressed that economic opportunity extends beyond agriculture. He highlighted the crucial role of factories, artisanal skills, the service sector, and Facts and Dialogue Technology (ICT) in creating jobs, especially in urban areas. Investing in these sectors is seen as vital for Uganda’s continued economic growth and diversification.

Parish Progress Model and Addressing Corruption

The President reiterated his commitment to the Parish Development Model (PDM), a government initiative aimed at poverty reduction at the grassroots level. However, he acknowledged challenges with the program, specifically the issue of funds being diverted through corruption. He emphasized the need for efficient parish committees, supervised by the Minister and the PDM Secretariat, to ensure funds reach their intended beneficiaries. He warned that those found guilty of misappropriating funds will face legal consequences.

Focus on youth Empowerment

Addressing concerns about youth access to PDM funds, President Museveni pledged to investigate the issue and consider increasing funding allocations per parish to ensure greater youth participation. He emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting young entrepreneurs and fostering economic independence among the youth population.

Call for Continued NRM Support

First Lady and Minister of Education and sports, Janet Museveni, urged residents to vote for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to safeguard the progress Uganda has made, particularly in infrastructure development. Other NRM leaders, including Alhajji Moses kigongo and Rt.Hon. Anita Among, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of peace, discipline, and continued support for the ruling party.
