Celebrating a Legacy of Dutch Rock at Volendams Museum
The Volendams Museum was abuzz with excitement on Sunday as it hosted a special celebration honoring two titans of the Dutch music scene: legendary rock band The Cats and celebrated guitarist Jan Akkerman. The event, a testament to the enduring impact of these musical icons, recognized their contributions to shaping the unique landscape of Dutch music.
The Cats, a name synonymous with rock and roll in the Netherlands, were presented with a special award celebrating their profound influence on generations of musicians and music lovers. Piet Veerman, Arnold Mühren, and Jaap Schilder, the surviving members of the band, were visibly moved by the recognition. Arnold Mühren, in his acceptance speech, took a nostalgic journey through the band’s history, reminiscing about the days of their first gold record and acknowledging the vast changes in the music industry since then.
Each member received a unique, custom-designed glass jar filled with musical notes, a symbolic representation of the enduring melodies that The Cats have woven into the tapestry of Dutch musical heritage. In a heartwarming moment, Piet Veerman embraced Mell, the granddaughter of fellow band member Piet, symbolizing the enduring legacy that continues to inspire new generations.
Jan Akkerman, a Volendam native celebrated for his virtuoso guitar skills, also received accolades for his lifelong dedication to music. He was awarded an “oeuvre prize” presented by his daughter, Laurie, further solidifying his esteemed position in the Dutch music world. Recognizing Akkerman’s connection to Volendam despite his Amsterdam roots, Arnold Mühren lightheartedly remarked, “Jan lives in Volendam but comes from Amsterdam. He was so smart to marry a Volendam woman. Jan is thus not a local sound, Jan is a world sound!”
This celebration wasn’t just about honoring individual achievements, however. It served as a powerful reminder of the rich tapestry of music that continues to flourish in the Netherlands. As Veerman poignantly concluded, “Never stop chasing your musical dreams.
