U.S. Soccer Names New Men’s National Team Coach Ahead of 2026 World Cup
The U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) has officially appointed Gregg Berhalter as the head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT), a decision confirmed by a press release on July 12, 2023. Berhalter, who previously led the team from 2018 to 2022, will return to the role ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host with Canada and Mexico.
Berhalter’s reappointment comes after a contentious tenure marked by mixed results, including a second-round exit at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The USSF cited his “deep understanding of the program” and “proven ability to develop players” in its statement. “This is a pivotal moment for U.S. soccer,” said USSF President Cindy Parlow Cone. “Gregg’s experience and vision align with our long-term goals.”
The decision follows months of speculation, with reports suggesting the federation had considered other candidates, including former Bundesliga coach Julian Nagelsmann and former U.S. player and coach Bruce Arena. However, sources familiar with the selection process indicated Berhalter’s familiarity with the squad and his track record in youth development secured his return.
Berhalter, 52, has coached clubs including Columbus Crew and the U.S. Under-20 team, winning the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup with the senior side. His return faces scrutiny, however, as the 2026 World Cup represents the most significant tournament in U.S. soccer history. “We’re aiming to make history in 2026,” Berhalter said in a statement. “This is a unique opportunity to elevate the game in our country.”
The appointment also coincides with the launch of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s expanded youth pathway, designed to identify and nurture talent for future World Cup cycles. The federation has allocated $50 million over the next five years to enhance grassroots programs, according to a separate announcement.
While some fans and analysts expressed skepticism, others welcomed the move. “Gregg knows the players and the system,” said ESPN soccer analyst Taylor Twp. “If he can stabilize the team and build consistency, 2026 could be a breakthrough.”
The USMNT’s first major test under Berhalter will be the 202
