Northern Ireland Speeds Up to the Future with Gigabit Broadband
Northern Ireland is taking significant strides towards bridging the digital divide, with two ambitious broadband projects set to transform internet access across the nation.
Project Stratum, a successful pilot program, has already connected approximately 15,000 premises in rural areas, particularly in the Fermanagh and Omagh region. With final connections slated for completion by June 2025, the project has proven the feasibility of delivering high-speed internet to harder-to-reach communities.
Now, Project Gigabit, a more expansive initiative, is poised to build upon this success. Backed by a £5 billion government investment, Project Gigabit aims to deliver gigabit-capable broadband to even more communities across Northern Ireland.
“Project Gigabit is crucial in bridging the digital divide and ensuring everyone has access to the same opportunities,” said a spokesperson for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport.
Launching in June 2025, the project will see on-the-ground work begin in earnest, with property owners in eligible areas able to apply for up to £4,500 to cover the cost of connecting to a gigabit-capable network. This funding will empower broadband providers to extend their reach into rural areas, delivering faster and more reliable service.
