Na Piarsaigh defeated Doon 2-25 to 2-18 to win the Limerick senior hurling championship for the ninth time at the TUS Gaelic Grounds. it’s a significant victory for the city side, who have now won the John Daly Cup six times in the last decade.
They’ll now face Ballygunner in the Munster senior club quarter-final, which will be played in Limerick in two weeks. This is a chance for them to advance further in the competition.
This final was a rematch of last year’s championship game, where Doon took the title. The first half was incredibly tight, ending in a 1-07 to 0-10 draw. Doon had opportunities late in the game, but a goal from Conor Boylan forced the match into extra time.
Na Piarsaigh dominated the extra time period, outscoring Doon by eight points to one. This decisive performance secured their ninth Limerick SHC title since their initial breakthrough at senior level in 2011.
Despite ten points from Limerick star Adam English, Doon couldn’t overcome Na Piarsaigh. A man-of-the-match performance from Limerick midfielder Will O’Donoghue was crucial for Na Piarsaigh, and they showcased their depth with 11 different scorers, including nine from the starting lineup.
Adrian Breen and Kevin Downes quickly put Na piarsaigh on the scoreboard within the first three minutes. Points from Will Henn, Mike Foley, and Downes again, interspersed with a Dean Coleman point and English’s first score, gave Shane O’Neill’s team an early three-point advantage.
The teams were level four times during the first half. Coleman’s unusual goal midway through the half brought the sides level for the first time.
Coleman reacted quickly to a loose ball in front of the goal after a long-range effort from Jack Ryan hit the crossbar.
