Winter Storm Watch Issued for Nantucket with Potential for Heavy Snow and Strong Winds

Nantucket, Massachusetts is under a winter storm watch as a second storm approaches, threatening heavy snow accumulation and powerful wind gusts. The current advisory is in effect from 4 p.m. On Sunday, February 22, to 7 a.m. On Tuesday, February 24.

Storm Details and Forecast

The National Weather Service forecasts heavy snow, potentially mixed with rain at times. Projected snow accumulations range from five to eight inches, with the possibility of up to 18 inches in some areas, particularly on Nantucket. The storm differs from last month’s event due to the combination of strong winds and heavy, wet snow, increasing the risk of power outages, larger waves, and tree damage.

Current forecasts predict sustained winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour, potentially increasing to 40-50 miles per hour by Monday, with gusts exceeding 70 miles per hour possible. The heaviest snowfall is expected to begin Sunday at 2 a.m. And continue through Monday afternoon, accumulating at a rate of one to two inches per hour. These conditions will create hazardous travel situations.

Coastal Flood Warning and Preparations

A coastal flood warning has been issued for Monday, February 23, from 1 a.m. To 7 a.m. Sheila Lucey, Harbormaster, announced the closure of the storm gate at Children’s Beach at 2 p.m. On Sunday, with reopening dependent on weather conditions.

Utility and Hospital Readiness

National Grid has stated they are prepared for the storm and have resources positioned on Nantucket. According to Christine Milligan, National Grid’s principal program manager, crews and personnel are ready to respond to potential power outages, including overhead and forestry teams already on the island as of Saturday afternoon [National Weather Service – Los Angeles].

Nantucket Cottage Hospital has announced the closure of Urgent Access and clinics on Monday, but Virtual Urgent Care will remain available 24/7 through the patient gateway. Clinic appointments are being rescheduled, while other hospital operations are expected to continue normally.
