National Academies fast-Track Climate Science Review
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will conduct an independent, rapid review of the latest climate science. This review directly addresses the Trump management’s plan to repeal the 2009 determination that greenhouse gas emissions endanger public health and the environment.
This self-funded study marks a shift for the Academies, who typically respond to requests from government agencies or Congress. They plan to release the findings publicly in September, influencing the Environmental Protection Agency’s decision regarding the “endangerment finding,” as detailed in their statement.
“Federal policymaking must be grounded in the best available science,” stated Marcia McNutt, president of the National Academy of Sciences. “Climate research over decades has substantially expanded our understanding of greenhouse gas impacts. We’re undertaking this review to provide policymakers and the public with the most current assessment.”
Established in 1863 with a congressional charter signed by President Lincoln, the National Academies are private, nonprofit institutions. They provide independent, objective analysis to inform public policy.
The Trump administration’s move to rescind the endangerment finding, announced last month, would dismantle the legal basis for key federal climate actions. These include regulating carbon pollution from vehicles and power plants under the Clean Air Act. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin has consistently signaled his intention to repeal climate regulations established under the Biden administration.
