NBA Reopens Investigation into Jaxson Hayes Domestic Violence Incident
The NBA has announced the reopening of an investigation into a 2021 domestic violence incident involving Los Angeles Lakers center Jaxson Hayes. This follows the release of security camera footage by TMZ showing Hayes arguing with his then-girlfriend, Sofia Jamora.
Video Footage Surfaces
TMZ released five-and-a-half minutes of security camera footage from July 28, 2021, capturing Hayes and Jamora arguing inside and outside a residence in Woodland Hills, California. The video depicts Hayes pulling Jamora out of a doorway, while she pleads with him to stop. Hayes is seen and heard using profanity and eventually spitting in Jamora’s direction.
Arrests and Charges
The incident resulted in a domestic disturbance call to the Los Angeles Police Department. Hayes was arrested at the scene and later sentenced to three years of probation, 450 hours of community service, and a year of weekly domestic violence classes.
The NBA did not initially impose any disciplinary action against Hayes following its investigation.
New Investigation and Statements
However, based on the newly surfaced video, the NBA has reopened its investigation.
“As a result of the media report and video posted this morning, we are reopening our investigation,” NBA spokesman Mike Bass told ESPN.
A spokesperson for Hayes acknowledged the reopening of the investigation and stated, “There has already been an extensive investigation that we cooperated with the league on, and as that investigation reopens, we will continue to do so.”
Jamora’s spokesperson expressed her willingness to cooperate with the new investigation and stated, “We understand that the NBA has a no-tolerance policy against domestic violence, and therefore the victim welcomes any further investigation into Hayes’ actions and will cooperate with said investigation.”
The Lakers, who signed Hayes to a two-year contract this past summer, have confirmed their cooperation with the league’s investigation. “We are cooperating with the league,” a Lakers spokesperson said.
Hayes’ Performance on the Court**
Despite the ongoing investigation, Hayes has been performing reasonably well for the Lakers this season, averaging 5.0 points and 4.2 rebounds in 15.7 minutes per game through their 4-2 start.
