Fish Oil Supplement Cuts Heart Attack Risk for Hemodialysis Patients

A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in March 2026 reveals that daily supplementation with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, commonly found in fish oil, significantly reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events in patients undergoing hemodialysis. The research, conducted by a team of doctors from Canada, Australia, and California, offers a potential breakthrough for a population particularly vulnerable to heart disease.

Cardiovascular Disease and Hemodialysis

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among patients receiving hemodialysis, a life-sustaining treatment for kidney failure that uses an external machine to filter blood. Despite the high risk, effective preventative therapies have been limited. Researchers sought to determine if fish oil supplementation could offer a benefit to this patient group.

Study Design and Findings

The study involved 1,228 patients receiving hemodialysis in Canada and Australia over a period of 3.5 years. Participants were assigned to receive either a capsule containing corn oil (placebo) or four grams of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (fish oil) daily. The results demonstrated a substantial reduction in serious cardiovascular events among those taking the fish oil supplement.

  • Cardiac death was reduced by 45%.
  • Heart attacks were reduced by 44%.
  • Stroke was reduced by 63%.
  • Peripheral vascular disease leading to amputation was reduced by 43%.

Implications for Patient Care

These findings suggest that daily supplementation with n-3 fatty acids could be a valuable addition to the care of patients undergoing hemodialysis. Even as further research may be needed to refine dosage and identify specific patient subgroups who benefit most, this study provides compelling evidence for the potential of fish oil to improve cardiovascular outcomes in this high-risk population. The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in March 2026.
