Neo Japanesque Bridges Cultures with Hanoi Debut

Hanoi welcomed a unique musical experience on March 6th and 7th, 2026, as the Japanese fusion band Neo Japanesque performed at the Youth Theater Vietnam. The concert, titled “Neo Japanesque: Crossing Sounds of Japan and the West,” marked the band’s first-ever performance in Vietnam, captivating audiences with its blend of traditional Japanese instruments and Western musical styles.

A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity

Formed in Nagoya in 2012, Neo Japanesque is a seven-member band known for seamlessly integrating traditional Japanese instruments like the taiko drums, shakuhachi (bamboo flute) and shinobue (transverse flute) with elements of Western music, including electric guitars and keyboards. Their performance featured a dynamic interplay of these sounds, creating a distinctive and captivating atmosphere.

Collaboration with Hanuyo Yosakoi Team

Adding a vibrant cultural exchange to the concert, Neo Japanesque collaborated with the Vietnamese Hanuyo Yosakoi Team. The collaboration showcased Yosakoi, a high-energy Japanese festival dance, expressing the spirit of Hanoi through a uniquely Japanese art form. This fusion of music and dance highlighted the shared energy and creativity between the two cultures. The Hanuyo Yosakoi Team carefully researches and integrates costumes, music, and props to express “Vietnamese spirit” through the dance.

Familiar Melodies with a Latest Twist

Beyond their original compositions, Neo Japanesque delighted the audience with fresh arrangements of popular J-Pop songs, including Yoasobi’s “IDOL” and Eimer’s “Zankyo Sanka.” These reinterpretations offered a new perspective on beloved tracks, further demonstrating the band’s innovative approach to music.

A Cultural Bridge

The “Neo Japanesque: Crossing Sounds of Japan and the West” concert successfully showcased an innovative approach to music, blending traditional and modern elements. The performance left a lasting impression as a cultural bridge between Vietnam and Japan, fostering a deeper appreciation for both artistic traditions.
