Netanyahu Praises Trump’s Controversial Gaza Plan
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has lauded President Donald Trump’s proposal for US control over Gaza and the potential displacement of its population, calling it “revolutionary” and “a completely different, much better vision for Israel.”
Trump’s Gaza Proposal Sparks Controversy
Trump’s plan, which has drawn widespread condemnation in the Middle East and globally, proposes US management of Gaza while temporary relocation of Palestinians ensues for rebuilding efforts. Netanyahu defended Trump’s idea in a Fox News interview, stating it was a “fresh idea” potentially transforming the future of the Palestinian territory.
“All Trump is saying, ‘I want to open the gate and give them an option to relocate temporarily while we rebuild the place physically,'” Netanyahu explained. He also asserted that Israel would handle the implementation of the plan, stating, “We’ll do the job.”
Netanyahu Sees a “Correct Approach”
Netanyahu argued that Trump’s proposal diverges from the “same old, same old” approach, which he believes leaves Gaza vulnerable to falling back into the hands of terrorist groups. He emphasized the need to relocate Palestinians for a successful reconstruction and stressed finding a country willing to accept them.
Palestinian Concerns and International Rejections
For Palestinians, any attempt to forcibly remove them from Gaza evokes memories of the 1948 Nakba, the mass displacement of Palestinians during Israel’s creation. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan dismissed Trump’s plan, stating it was “completely futile” and that “no one has the power to remove the people of Gaza from their homeland.”
Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan have also expressed strong opposition to the proposal, with Jordan’s King Abdullah warning it could lead to further instability in the region.
International Diplomatic Efforts
Amidst the controversy, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty travelled to Washington to discuss regional developments with senior US officials. Egypt also announced an emergency Arab summit on February 27th to address the situation.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog reported that US President Trump is scheduled to meet with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Jordan’s King Abdullah.
Ceasefire Negotiations Continue
Meanwhile, Israel remains focused on the ongoing ceasefire with Hamas and the release of remaining hostages. After the fifth hostage-prisoner swap, Netanyahu reaffirmed his commitment to crushing Hamas, while Hamas officials expressed concerns over Israel’s adherence to the ceasefire agreement.
The situation in Gaza remains highly volatile.
