Modi Visits Yad Vashem with Netanyahu, Strengthening India-Israel Ties
Jerusalem, Israel – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem on Thursday, marking a solemn moment in Modi’s visit and underscoring the deepening relationship between the two nations. Following the visit, the leaders are expected to sign agreements aimed at bolstering bilateral cooperation.
A Solemn Remembrance at Yad Vashem
The two prime ministers began their tour of the Holocaust museum in the Hall of Names, where Netanyahu showed Modi the names of relatives of his wife, Sara, who were killed during the Holocaust. A memorial ceremony followed, during which Modi laid a wreath and placed a stone on the memorial in remembrance of the victims.
Modi reflected on the visit in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “The Holocaust stands as one of humanity’s darkest chapters. It is an eternal reminder of the need to uphold humanity, dignity and peace.”
Deepening Bilateral Ties
The visit to Yad Vashem precedes planned meetings between the Indian and Israeli leaders to formalize a series of agreements. These agreements are expected to cover a wide range of sectors, including science, agriculture, renewable energy, academic exchange, and financial cooperation. Both countries are too actively pursuing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Officials suggest this visit could represent the most significant upgrade in relations between India and Israel since the establishment of full diplomatic ties in 1992. An official departure ceremony for Prime Minister Modi is scheduled at the airport following the signing of the agreements.
