  • Netflix wants to steal the Premier League from Sky and TNT Sport

Netflix aims for continued strong growth, and sports broadcasts are expected to attract new customers and revenue. Securing highly sought-after sports rights will require notable investment from the US provider. After missing out on the Champions League, Netflix has set its sights on a new target.

According to the “Times,” Netflix wants to broadcast the English Premier League, challenging Sky and TNT Sports. Currently, both TV channels broadcast live games in the UK. Sky Sports shows the majority – at least 215 live broadcasts per season.

Netflix’s Premier League Ambitions

TNT Sports (formerly BT Sports) broadcasts 52 games, including exclusive Saturday 12:30 PM kick-offs.The BBC currently holds no rights for live Premier League games, focusing instead on highlight programs like “Match of the day.” The current rights package is valid until the 2028/29 season.

This means Netflix could not broadcast the Premier League on English television before 2029. Though, it’s more likely netflix is planning worldwide coverage, leveraging its extensive reach and aiming for exclusive broadcasting rights.

Netflix has considerably expanded its sports offerings in recent years, initially focusing on sports documentaries and series offering behind-the-scenes access.
