New Belgian Pension Statement Replaces Old Forms: What to Expect

Belgium Rolls Out Unified Pension Statements for 4.5 Million Workers

Some 4.5 million employees and self-employed workers in Belgium will receive a completely redesigned, uniform overview of their supplementary pension plans in their digital mailboxes in the course of November. The initiative, decided under the De Croo government, replaces the fragmented notices previously issued individually by various insurers and pension funds. Under the new system, the pension service Sigedis will gather, consolidate, and deliver all of a worker’s supplementary pension data in one single document.

What the Unified Pension Overview Contains

The revised statement is structured into four main sections, beginning with an introductory contextual letter followed by a comprehensive summary of all pension plans, both active and dormant. This summary aggregates the total gross pension reserves accumulated across every plan and projects the expected total capital upon retirement. It also accounts for any existing death coverage benefits. The document then details each plan individually, tracking the evolution of the accumulated reserves from the start of the previous year through January 1 of the current year, alongside employer and employee contributions, taxes, and risk premiums.

Projections and Calculation Methods

To forecast future retirement capital, the overview applies three distinct scenarios—unfavorable, neutral, and favorable—using standardized return rates determined annually by the Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA). The timeline highlights the neutral scenario as a benchmark. However, pension expert Melissa Thirion of insurance umbrella organization Assuralia cautioned that these figures remain strictly indicative. “No affiliate will get the exact amount listed there,” Thirion said, noting that calculations rely on hypotheses regarding future returns, employment status, and contributions while excluding future wage indexations.

Accessing the Digital Document via eBox

Distribution of the new document relies on digital registration. Individuals who have activated their governmental eBox or registered an email address on MyPension will receive a digital notification in the course of November. Approximately 70 percent of Belgians are already registered with the federal government, according to pension expert Melissa Thirion of Assuralia. Workers not registered in the federal system will instead receive separate notices directly from their respective insurers for each individual plan rather than a consolidated overview.

Frequently Asked Questions About Supplementary Pensions

What happens to my supplementary pension if I change jobs?

If you leave your employer, the overview shows what your accumulated reserve can become if it remains in the plan until your contractual retirement age, including any applicable death or accident coverage.

How are fixed-contribution plans different from target plans?

Defined contribution plans—the most widespread format—do not promise a fixed capital sum at retirement; instead, final amounts depend on monthly contributions and investment returns. In contrast, defined benefit plans focus solely on the promised capital target at retirement age without displaying annual reserve evolutions.

Why does the January 1 snapshot differ from my current salary?

Assuralia notes that the data snapshot is technically captured on December 31, meaning it cannot account for immediate wage increases or salary indexations.
