Sony Pictures Revives ‘Charlie’s Angels’ with New Film
Sony Pictures is developing a new feature film installment of Charlie’s Angels, tapping screenwriter Pete Chiarelli to pen the script, according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter and Variety.
Franchise History
The Charlie’s Angels franchise originated with the popular ABC crime drama that aired from 1976 to 1981, starring Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith as female private investigators working for the mysterious Charlie Townsend. The indicate, created by Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts and produced by Aaron Spelling, became a cultural phenomenon. Deadline notes the series ran for 115 episodes.
Previous Film Adaptations
Sony previously brought Charlie’s Angels to the big screen in 2000, starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu, directed by McG. The film was a box office success, grossing over $264 million worldwide and spawning a 2003 sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. A 2019 reboot, directed by Elizabeth Banks and starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska, received a mixed reception and underperformed at the box office.
Chiarelli’s Involvement and Future Direction
Pete Chiarelli is known for his work on films such as Crazy Rich Asians, The Proposal, and Now You See Me 2. Deadline reports he is currently represented by UTA, Mosaic, and Yorn Levine.
It remains unclear whether the new film will serve as a continuation of previous storylines or introduce a new team of Angels. Sources suggest Drew Barrymore’s Flower Films may be involved in producing the new version, as they were with the 2000 and 2019 films, though Sony has not yet commented. The Hollywood Reporter indicates the project is in early development.
