Electricity Bill Discounts Coming to Chicago

Thousands of low-income residents in the Chicago area will be eligible for new discounts on thier electricity bills starting next year, as electricity rates rise.

Starting january 1, ComEd will launch a discount program for households with incomes up to three times the federal poverty level. This means a household of four earning up to $83,250 annually coudl qualify. The program aims to offset increasing electricity supply costs, which are projected to rise considerably in 2025.

The discount will be applied directly to monthly bills. ComEd estimates the average eligible household will save around $20 to $30 per month. Customers do not need to take any action to enroll; ComEd will automatically identify and enroll eligible customers based on income verification data.

“We understand the financial pressures many families are facing, and we’re committed to providing assistance to those who need it most,” said ComEd spokesperson, David Farber. “This program will help ensure that essential energy services remain affordable for our most vulnerable customers.”

Residents can check their eligibility and learn more about the program on the ComEd website. Additional energy assistance programs are also available through the state of Illinois, including the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Information about LIHEAP can be found at the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity website.
