New ‘Evangelion’ Anime Series in Production at Studio Khara and CloverWorks

One of the most influential works in anime history, the “Neon Genesis Evangelion” franchise, is continuing with a brand-new television anime series. The project was announced at an event celebrating the franchise’s 30th anniversary in Yokohama, Japan.

Production Details

Studio Khara, founded by Hideaki Anno in 2006, is producing the new series in collaboration with CloverWorks. Khara is best known for its work on the “Rebuild of Evangelion” film tetralogy. Kazuya Tsurumaki, director of the “Rebuild of Evangelion” films and “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX,” will co-direct the project alongside Toko Yatabe (“Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time”).

Yoko Taro, creator of “NieR,” is writing the script and handling series composition, whereas Keiichi Okabe, known for his work on “NieR” and “Tekken,” is composing the music.

The Legacy of ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’

Hideaki Anno’s “Neon Genesis Evangelion” originally aired in 1995 and quickly became a landmark series. The story centers on teenagers piloting giant robots, known as ‘Evas,’ against monstrous beings called ‘Angels’ threatening humanity. The series is renowned for its deconstruction of the mecha genre and its exploration of complex themes, including existential uncertainty, mental health, and coming-of-age struggles.

The original 26-episode series and the film “End of Evangelion” are currently available on Netflix. The four “Rebuild of Evangelion” films can be streamed on Prime Video.

Gainax’s Role and Studio Khara’s Emergence

The original “Neon Genesis Evangelion” series was produced by Gainax. However, as of December 2025, Gainax has officially shut down after 42 years, with Studio Khara taking over the franchise over a decade ago. Trigger acquired most of Gainax’s remaining assets around five years ago.

Anno left Gainax to establish Khara, stating his intention to create something “better than the last series” in a new environment. The name “Khara” originates from the Greek word χαρά (chará), meaning joy, and was handwritten in Greek letters by Anno’s wife, Moyoco.
