Maria Antonieta Alcalde Castro to Lead International Planned Parenthood Federation into a Novel Era

The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) has appointed Maria Antonieta Alcalde Castro as its next Director General, effective March 1, 2026. Castro, who previously served as Executive Director of Ipas Latin America and Caribbean, will serve a four-year term, succeeding Alvaro Bermejo.

A Focus on Bodily Autonomy and Comprehensive SRHR

Castro’s appointment signals a renewed commitment to expanding the scope of sexual and reproductive health (SRHR) beyond traditional services. She aims to make IPPF a more forceful advocate for bodily autonomy, gender justice, and a broader understanding of comprehensive SRHR, encompassing social, economic, and political factors that impact access to care. Speaking to The Lancet prior to assuming her role, Castro stated, “I want IPPF to remain a trusted partner and provider of high quality sexual and reproductive health [SRH] services, especially for those who are underserved, continue to be unapologetically a global voice for bodily autonomy, gender justice, human rights as a whole, and to share that power.” The Lancet

Challenges and Strengths Ahead

Acknowledging the hurdles facing global SRHR, Castro recognizes the need for a robust and collaborative approach. Access to care remains uneven worldwide, hampered by financial constraints, geographical limitations, social stigma, and increasing misinformation. Despite these challenges, Castro expressed confidence in IPPF’s ability to effect change, stating, “We have many challenges but at the same time we have a lot of strength.” Life Science Network

Building on Existing Momentum

Castro’s leadership builds upon the foundation laid by outgoing Director General Alvaro Bermejo, who provided leadership since 2018. IPPF. Her experience in movement-building is expected to amplify the voices of those most affected by restrictive laws and systemic inequalities, strengthening IPPF’s role not just as a service provider, but as a catalyst for broader social change.

The Future of IPPF Under New Leadership

With Castro at the helm, IPPF is poised to advocate for a more inclusive and equitable approach to SRHR, challenging the status quo and prioritizing the needs of underserved communities. This shift reflects a growing recognition that true reproductive health extends beyond contraception and maternal care, encompassing the fundamental right to control one’s own body and live with dignity.
