Turkey Takes a Hard Line Against Abandoned Matches

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) is launching a zero-tolerance campaign against a growing problem plaguing Turkish football: abandoned matches. In a series of new regulations, the TFF has imposed sweeping financial penalties and individual sanctions aimed at curbing this disruptive behavior and safeguarding the integrity of the sport.

The new disciplinary measures come after a concerning rise in teams walking off the pitch, mid-game or at halftime, leaving opponents and fans bewildered and frustrated. This trend has not only fueled controversies but also threatened to undermine the fairness and credibility of Turkish football.

The TFF’s response? Severe economic consequences for offending clubs. Fines will range from 20 million Turkish Lira (TL) to 100 million TL, depending on the league and the circumstances of the abandonment. The scale of these penalties underscores the TFF’s commitment to tackling the issue head-on.

But financial penalties are only part of the equation. The TFF is going even further by imposing bans on club officials and players implicated in match abandonments. Club managers face a one-year ban from all football-related activities, while club officers could be prohibited from entering the locker room and technical area. Players involved in the abandonment could be suspended for between five and ten competitions.

Perhaps the harshest sanction of all is reserved for club chairmen who orchestrate withdrawals – a mandatory one-year ban from football management.

While the TFF’s intention is clear: to send a strong message against match abandonment, concerns have been raised about the potential impact of these hefty fines on smaller clubs with limited financial resources.

Demir Aycan, Head of Disciplinary Procedures for the TFF, acknowledges these concerns. "We understand the challenges smaller clubs face," he explained in an exclusive interview with Archyde, "That’s why we’ve structured the penalties to be proportionate to the league each team belongs to. While the fines are substantial for all clubs, they are scaled based on financial capacity. We also offer payment plans to help clubs manage these costs.”

Aycan emphasized that individual accountability is crucial to deterring this type of behavior. "Holding individuals accountable is crucial for ensuring that the deterrent effect of these penalties reaches those who are responsible for making decisions on the field."

"These measures send a clear message that abandoning matches will not be tolerated," Aycan stated. “The implementation of these changes marks a decisive step in safeguarding the integrity and fair play of Turkish football".

The success of these new efforts will depend on consistent and impartial enforcement. The TFF’s strong stance against abandoned matches is a crucial step towards preserving the credibility and integrity of Turkish football for the benefit of fans, players, and the entire sporting community.
