Superman Returns: A Trailer Packed With Nostalgia and Krypto!

Superman is back, and he brought his trusty canine sidekick along for the ride! Fans are buzzing on social media after the release of the action-packed trailer for the upcoming film, simply titled *Superman*, set to soar into theaters on July 11, 2025.

A Retro Feel with a Modern Twist

The trailer harkens back to vintage Superman, with its bright aesthetic, the return of the iconic red underwear, and the prominent feature of Krypto, the loyal Superdog who’s been a fixture in comics since the 1950s but rarely seen in movies.

“Everybody is talking about it,” said one excited fan. “This trailer has people who aren’t even interested in comic books or superheroes checking it out.”

The trailer is brimming with Easter eggs, including a modernized, electric guitar-led version of John Williams’s iconic 1978 *Superman* score. This nostalgic touch has only added to the excitement.

Krypto Could Be the Movie’s Secret Weapon

Reactions on social media are overwhelmingly positive, with fans eager to see the new look and showering Krypto with love. Many consider him the film’s “secret weapon.”

A New Era for DC Studios?

The upcoming film marks the first Superman movie since writer and director James Gunn took over DC Studios. This raises questions among diehard fans about the future of the franchise after Zack Snyder’s 10-year run.

DC has faced recent challenges, with underwhelming box office numbers and criticism for its darker tones and lack of consistency. Read more about DC’s recent challenges.

A DC Studios press release describes *Superman* as “a singular blend of epic action, humor, and heart,” featuring a Superman driven by compassion and an inherent belief in humanity.

A Classic Superman Returns

David Corenswet’s portrayal seems to embody this brighter depiction, even down to his iconic superhero garb. The return of the red undies, a sky-blue uniform, and a simplified logo signal a departure from recent trends of toning down classic comic elements.

Corenswet takes over the role from Henry Cavill, who played Superman in the 2013 *Man of Steel* and other films in the Snyderverse.

Kalman Andrasofszky, a Toronto-based illustrator, character designer, and comic artist, notes that the new costume skillfully balances elements from Christopher Reeve’s classic 1970s and 80s suit and the 2011 New 52 comic revision, avoiding the darker color palette seen in Snyder’s films.

“It’s kind of cherry-picking a few different bits from different eras of Superman, but I think it’s doing it really well. The costume looks great,” he said.

Andrasofszky shares that while comic fans can be critical, the general sentiment is one of excitement for a “more innocent, more optimistic Superman.”

Emphasizing Compassionate Superman

“This movie feels like it’s trying to kind of reset the impression of Superman as something wholesome, which a lot of the last several movies kind of veered away from,” he said.

Despite the action and tension, evident in snippets of a fire-breathing monster, a dying robot, and the formidable villain Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult), the trailer spotlights Superman’s inherent compassion.

Moments showcasing playful interactions with Krypto, a tender hug with his father, and heartwarming moments with Lois Lane (played by Rachel Brosnahan) highlight the depth of characterization.

“The trailer is so focused on two things,” Andrasofszky continued. “It’s archetypal Superman moments, but all of them seem to be angled towards human connection, compassion, and things that maybe have been absent from the Superman movies for a while but are kind of inherent to the character — restraint, warmth, and humanity.”
