Trump Honors Olympians and Service Members at State of the Union

During his State of the Union address on February 24, 2026, President Trump recognized several individuals for their service and achievements, bestowing honors including the Purple Heart, the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Legion of Merit, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Honoring Fallen and Wounded Service Members

Among those recognized were Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe and the family of Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, both members of the West Virginia National Guard. Wolfe and Beckstrom were ambushed and shot whereas on patrol in Washington, D.C., near the White House in November 2025. Beckstrom tragically died from her injuries, while Wolfe survived after being critically wounded.

President Trump presented Wolfe with the Purple Heart during the address, pinning the medal to his lapel. A posthumous Purple Heart was also awarded to Beckstrom’s family. The President highlighted Beckstrom’s dedication, noting her recent voluntary extension of her deployment and impending rank promotion before the attack. He described her death as a result of a “terrorist monster from Afghanistan” who “shouldn’t have been in our country.” CBS News

Presidential Medal of Freedom Awarded to Connor Hellebuyck

The President also announced the awarding of the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Connor Hellebuyck, the goalie for the U.S. Men’s Olympic hockey team. Hellebuyck played a key role in the team’s gold medal victory at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics. Axios

Standing Ovation for the U.S. Men’s Hockey Team

The entire U.S. Men’s Olympic hockey team received a roughly two-minute bipartisan standing ovation during the State of the Union address. The team had previously visited President Trump at the White House on Tuesday afternoon. AP News

President Trump also indicated that the U.S. Women’s Olympic hockey team would be honored “soon.”
