Dawn Meats CEO Niall Browne Honored as Irish Times Business Person of the Year

Niall Browne, Chief Executive of Dawn Meats, has been named The Irish Times Business Person of the Year for 2025. The award, presented on Thursday night at the eighth annual Irish Times Business Awards in Dublin’s Mansion House, recognizes Browne’s leadership during a period of significant international expansion for the Waterford-based meat processor. The Irish Times reported on the event.

Strategic Acquisition of Alliance Group

The recognition comes following the successful completion of Dawn Meats’ acquisition of a 65 percent stake in Alliance Group, New Zealand’s largest red meat processor. The deal, finalized in December 2025, involved an investment of 270 million New Zealand dollars (approximately €132 million at the time of the agreement). Dawn Meats announced the completion of the transaction.

Farmer-Shareholder Benefits

Under the terms of the agreement, Alliance Group’s farmer-shareholders retain a 35 percent stake in the business and are set to benefit from distributions of up to NZ$20 million in both the initial and subsequent financial years. Southland Tribune detailed the benefits for farmer-shareholders.

Leadership Transition at Alliance Group

Following the completion of the deal, Willie Wiese stepped down as Chief Executive of Alliance Group, with Niall Browne assuming the role on an interim basis in addition to his responsibilities at Dawn Meats. The Irish Times reported on this leadership change.

Expansion and Market Position

Browne emphasized the strategic importance of the acquisition, stating that it would allow Dawn Meats to secure a year-round supply of sustainable, grass-fed red meat and expand its presence in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Dawn Meats highlighted the expanded market position resulting from the partnership with Alliance Group and its UK company, Dunbia.

Industry Recognition and Company Performance

In addition to the Business Person of the Year award, Dawn Meats also received recognition for product quality, winning the award for the World’s Best Steak alongside Lidl for its grass-fed Angus sirloin. The Irish Times noted this additional achievement. Dawn Meats, founded in 1980, currently employs over 8,000 people and exports to more than 50 countries, with an annual turnover exceeding €3 billion.
